Latest St Kilda player Adam Franks arrives in Melbourne Monday Sep 27 from Los Angeles, hoping to sneak through customs with kilos of beef jerky and several taser guns. We spent a minute with him on the phone from his home in sunny Los Angeles.
Background
Adam hit .319 as a senior catcher/firstbaseman playing at Occidental College in Los Angeles, with 31 RBIs in 38 games. Two time All-Conference and elected team captain all four years of college. Adam brings to St Kilda an extensive amount of experience behind the plate and at first base to the club - not to mention a quality bat.
When asked about resident St Kilda 1's players - catcher Dale Benness and 1B Joe Keiper, Adam responded "Who? Is Dale related to Elaine? Is Joe that old guy who showed up at Oxy with a sack of money calling himself 'Keips'?"
What are your expectations in playing baseball in Australia?
Mainly to enjoy the game. I haven't played for 10 months and I want to get back into it and have fun. Having said that, I am very competitive and I want to win, and I hope to improve the team in any way I can while I am there.
Best thing on TV
The Office. It's a comedy about a paper-selling company and follows an office day to day. I'm not a huge t.v. guy but if its not that I'll watch baseball tonight on espn, recapping the baseball days news.
Baseball career highlight to date
Getting to play in Dodger Stadium for my high school championship game. Truly amazing feeling to be out on that field.
What are you hoping to check out while in Australia?
In Australia I definitely want to see the reef, thats my big goal. Other than that I was going to check out my Australia books on the way over, its a long flight! Oh, and the women as well.
Favourite band?
Not one in particular, I'll listen to anything with a beat. Not sure I've ever heard anything with a Didgeridoo though.
